Games and tech industry journalism
WHAT IS THE GANDER?
A gander is a male goose… or more appropriately, it’s a look/glance at something. We are currently building The Gander’s website and are in need of writers willing to put their nose to the grindstone and contribute pro bono. We aren’t blind to how this sounds: it’s a new games publication, no promise of pay, why would you do that, etc.
WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?
A fair share of things, actually and can only grow as we increase in popularity.
- A byline complete with a photo of yourself and social media links, if so desired.
- A lax digital “work” environment to talk to other staff/writers (via Discord).
- Experience in writing games industry coverage that you can take to future employers in the writing industry (particularly games and tech industries would work best).
- An allotted email after two months of consistent writing.
WILL I EVER BE PAID AT THE GANDER?
Ah, a fair question, we must say. Again, we understand the matter of pro bono work and the stipulations that come with it. We also understand that some of you may see this in a negative light. Volunteer work isn’t a thing everyone enjoys. But, our goal is to garner a dedicated audience, praise, and – above all else – revenue so we can do away with volunteer work. All in all, it depends on a myriad of factors. Chief among them are how well you contribute and more so, how much attention you bring to the table in your works.
HOW DO YOU PLAN ON MAKING MONEY?
In the future, our goal is to make content widely available while also having our best columnists behind a low-level paywall with at least one column a month from any of our top columnists… which could be you! All in all, our goal is to not lock out interested readers from seeking top-tier industry coverage. Rather we’re seeking compensation for as low as $1 a month to as much as $5 a month for specific content. Basically, regular reporters will have their content free to read, but high-quality columns will be behind a subscription.
We will also be using Adsense once that comes available to us. Affiliate programs will also suffice, such as Humble Bundle and the Amazon Affiliate Program. Finally, once we draw enough attention, we’ll begin accepting custom ad spots from companies. We will not accept sites such as G2A or overt gambling applications, though.
CAN I REVIEW GAMES ON THE GANDER?
While our numero uno focus on content is games industry coverage, we will not stop you from creating a review for a game you like, new or old, on The Gander. We just ask that you at least keep in mind
DO I NEED TO SHARE MY OWN WORK ON SOCIAL MEDIA?
While a Facebook is in the works and we do have an Instagram, Twitter is another story, due to their requirements of phone verification and their current slowness, it’s been a bit of a standstill.
It’s my firm belief that social media is a key component to draw a potential reader’s attention. This is why we would encourage – but not force – users to share their articles across any social media they have – big or small. Even if we can get a single viewer from your social media to our website, it still attracts attention.
WILL I BE ABLE TO SEE MY STATS?
The Gander is looking into the best ways to share your stats with you and you being able to look over how well your content did at your leisure. That said, even “the best” method is going to have a margin of error, how big that margin of error is, is undermined. If we determine there isn’t a current way we can do so effectively, we will absolutely share your stats if asked.
WILL THE GANDER BE MAKING VIDEOS?
In the future, The Gander does plan on creating video content for platforms such as YouTube, but first, we need a strong connection with our crew to make sure it doesn’t jeopardize our output and/or quality of content.
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?
Here’s the meat and potatoes and what you probably care about the most. Despite our volunteer basis, we do have requirements that – while somewhat loose – we expect you to follow.
- Well-versed in the arts of grammar and English.
- Willing to use your real name.
- Three articles a month after launch. We have a goal of 10 total articles before we launch.
- Access to Discord.
- Ability to do your own research effectively.
- Loves gaming… for obvious reasons.
There you have, those are our requirements. Of course, the article minimum is subject to change if life gets in the way. We will never seriously tell someone to put The Gander above their physical health, mental health, and/or well-being. If you are in college and swamped by paperwork or assignments, that’s fine and it happens, just be 100 percent honest and tell us when it happens.
Thanks for considering writing for us!
